Following the sudden death of former hockey player Jack Thorton, his wife Elaine seeks to restore their minor-league team’s fortunes by recruiting Joan “Jo” Bulloch, a former women’s Olympic hockey player. Jo cannot resist the chance to play alongside men, to prove she’s more than up to the challenge. Jo finds herself on the same team as her childhood idol, Robby Rowan. During her first weeks on the team, Jo ends up in a bar fight… and struggling against the men.
Jo dedicates herself to learning from legendary Coach Theo Pryzbylski, now the cynical coach of the Yellowjackets. Elaine decides that Jo could add some “sex appeal” to the team, which would help sell tickets. Trying to become a better player while dealing with Tiffany Lewin, a reporter for Fashionably Fit, Jo ends up a local celebrity. During a dinner with Nick Thorton, the owner’s son, Jo again finds herself in a defensive fight.
Benched for fighting and disliked by her teammates, Jo is watching from the bench when her former idol suffers a serious injury on the ice. Jo impulsively responds, rushing onto the ice to defend Robby. Impressed by Jo’s selfless act, Coach P puts Jo back in the game. Working with the team, Jo scores the winning goal, qualifying the Yellowjackets for the minor-league playoffs.
